* ENDORSED BY THE RECORD *
.......and elected by the people!
Bill Martin has been a resident of Havre de Grace since 1992, following his parents’ relocation to the area as they expanded their antique postcard business. An avid student of American history, Bill found a way to merge his love of history (much documented through the very postcards his family sells) with his desire to pass on this knowledge.
He graduated with a B.A. in U.S History and Secondary Education from Salisbury State University in 1997. Bill continued his studies with a Master’s of Science degree in Education (2005) and 30 plus graduate credits in Education (2007) through Walden University.
Bill has used this education in his daily life as an 8th grade U.S History teacher at Aberdeen Middle School, where he has taught for the past ten years. Bill has continually asserted his leadership as an educator, receiving accolades as “Most Innovative Teacher” (2004), and Boys and Girls Club Teacher of the Year (2005). He has also served as a member of the School Improvement Team, a Chess Club advisor, and a 21st Century after-school program instructor for the past three years.
Prior to his career as a teacher, Bill has held his share of interesting jobs. He worked his way through college as a Longliner (commercial fisherman) out of Ocean City, MD. His claim to fame is that the ship he served on was bought by Hollywood to be used in the film The Perfect Storm. He also worked for many years in the family business, Mary L. Martin Postcards, working in antique sales and acquisitions. This work has provided him with extensive knowledge of our country’s vast geography and history, making him all that more appreciative of the city he calls home.
Bill served as a board member for the Susquehanna Museum at the Lock House, and later took on the position of Treasurer, which he held for several years. For the past four years, Bill (along with some friends and family members) has been responsible for the creation and placement of 1300 luminaries along the streets of Havre de Grace for the annual Candlelight Tour of Homes. Bill is also a member of Susquehanna Lodge #130 of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. Finally, Bill serves as the captain of his hockey team, The Moose, who play weekly in Abingdon.
The most important thing in Bill’s life is his family. Bill married his wife, Taryn, in true Havre de Grace style, with a ceremony at Concord Point Lighthouse and a reception at the beautiful Vandiver Inn in downtown Havre de Grace. The couple has three children: Devon (8), Molly (2), and Will (1). Devon attends Meadowvale Elementary School. Bill is an active parent participant with Devon in Cub Scout Pack 965, as well as Havre de Grace Rec Soccer and Lacrosse. Bill and Devon also enjoy taking care of the family’s growing family of Netherland Dwarf rabbits.
